Norman Schwarzkopf, the swaggering commander of U.S. troops in the Persian Gulf, was visiting Saudi forces on the frontline border with Kuwait. He and the colonel of the Saudi military unit climbed an observation tower and Schwarzkopf began scanning the area with his binoculars for the enemy. No sign of activity. Would you like to see some Iraqi troops? the Saudi colonel asked. You bet!. Schwarzkopf said excitedly, scanning more vigilantly. No, No, said the Saudi, who gently pushed Schwarzkopf's binoculars downward until he was looking at the base of the tower. There he spied an armored personnel carrier and some scruffy soldiers chatting pleasantly with the Saudi troops. Those are the Iraqis, the Saudi told the astounded Schwarzkopf. The Saudi then explained that the Iraqi frontline troops are so ill supplied that they regularly approach the Saudis to ask for food and water, which they receive. Schwarzkopf then bounded down the tower, chatted with the Iraqis and even looked under the hood of their vehicle.
