S: Were there other extenuating circumstances that dictated how
we operated here; for instance, geographical location or
anything of that sort?
M: In a very remote part of Saudi Arabia, everything needs to
come in by either air or land transportation. The supply
line was very long. It would take days or weeks to get
parts and supplies. You have to understand that we were in
a war situation.[(b)(l)sec3.4 (b)(5)] were often enough, if not
constant; the weather, like I said, produced either by the
Kuwaiti oil fires or just natural occurrences. The raw
number of emergency aircraft landing here, either because of
mechanical failure or battle damage, detracted from the
sortie rate on certain days.
Again, we were single runway operations, and we had to live
with that. We knew that we would be a primary divert
airfield, and we were. We had six aircraft major mishaps
during the 30-day period, beginning with the F-4 and ending
