           I recommend Sergeant Erik K. Vankampen, [(b)(6)]for the award of the
           Airman's Medal for heroism for risking his own life to save the life of
           another.  On 11 April 1991, aircraft F-16A 79-0391, deployed from the 174th
           TFW, blew a nose tire on takeoff and veered off of the runway at Al Kharj
           Air Base, Saudi Arabia. As the aircraft caught fire, the pilot ejected.
           The pilot, stunned but alive, landed less than 150 feet behind the stricken
           aircraft. Without regard for his own personal safety and despite the danger
           posed by hydrazine exposure, burning JP-8 aircraft fuel, and live munitions
           engulfed in flames, Sergeant Vankampen ran toward the burning aircraft to
           rescue the injured pilot. Unable to see due to the choking black smoke, he
           followed the parachute risers until reaching the pilot. Grabbing him by his
           harness, he proceeded to drag the injured pilot to safety. Sergeant
           Vankampen's immediate and selfless response to this emergency situation
           makes him well deserving of the recognition this distinguished decoration
           brings.
