As the build-up continued, the number of crews gradually increased to eight per beddown site. The crews staged at the C-130 beddowns were tasked to fly the daily channel missions (Samaritans) within the AOR (see attachment 5). Each location averaged three channel missions per week, with an occasional urgent mission tasking. The Samaritan missions continued throughout the period of hostilities, moving both DNBI patients and battle casualties. Additional retrograde AE missions to evacuate battle casualties from forward areas were supported by tactical crews based at the strategic hubs or the forward MASFs. At the onset of the ground war, there were 99 tactical crews (497 AECMs) in the AOR (see Table 5). (2) Beddown Site Management. As the number of AECMs increased at the beddown sites, so did management requirements. To provide adequate control over those operations, a senior ranking nurse (0-5) was eventually placed at each location. This nurse supervised the assigned AECMs and managed the daily AE operation of the site. He/she also served as the aeromedical evacuation representative to the host commander at each location. (3) Strategic (C-141) AECMs. Strategic AECMs (94% ARC assets, were used within the AOR throughout Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM. The initial tasking placed 12 crews at each of the first two AE hubs, Riyadh and Dhahran. This requirement expanded during the pre-hostility phase to a total of 50 crews divided among the five AE strategic hubs. As stated earlier, additional 14
