(3) Crew rest provisions were to be followed as closely as the situation 
allowed. 
 
(4) MASF personnel were to remain assigned to their nonflying duties. 
However, under certain circumstances, such as when AECMs were on duties not 
involving flying (DNIF) status or during surge situations, qualified MASF 
personnel would be allowed to serve as aircrew members and perform flying 
duties. 
 
The concept proved to be very effective throughout the Operation. MASF 
personnel and AECMs remained flexible and innovative in their approach to 
patient movement. 
f^ 
e. Arminq of AE Crewmembers. In accordance with CENTAF policy, all tactical 
crewmembers were to carry weapons on tactical missions. In support of that 
policy, the AECC disseminated the following guidance to AECMs: 
 
(1) Only AECMs currently qualified were authorized to carry weapons. 
 
(2) Weapons were to be kept unloaded, with ammunition readily available. 
 
(3) AECMs were to load weapons only at the direction of the aircraft 
commander. 
 
(4) AECMs were not permitted to carry weapons on strategic AE missions. 
 
Weapons custodians were appointed in writing at each location to ensure 
proper tracking and disbursement of weapons. 
 
f. AE Operations in a Chemical/Biological Environment. Due to the potential 
for the Iraqis to employ chemical or biological agents, the AECC provided 
the following guidance to AECEs and MASFs regarding operations in a 
contaminated environment: 
 
(1) MACR 55-130, Vol I, Chapter 20, "Chemical Operations and Procedures." 
 
(2) US Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense Technical 
Memorandum 90-1, "Clinical Notes on Chemical Casualty Care." 
 
(3) 1611 AES(P) Numbered Directives 91-08 and 91-19. 
 
In addition, 22 personnel from a variety of TAES elements attended the 
Medical Management of Chemical Casualties Course and then served as resource 
personnel at their duty locations. There were no documented incidents of use 
of chemical or biological agents during the Operation. 
g. Evacuation of Enemy Prisoners of War (EPWs). Per guidance
