DESERT STORM   30 January 1991

General Weather. A low-pressure system developed In the
eastern Mediterranean and moved eastward across Syria, reaching
western Iraq by the end of the day.

Areas of Interest. The storm system produced extensive
cloudiness over Turkey and Syria, as shown ~ Figure 3~ G. Snow

The subtropical jet stream produced high clouds across central
Saudi Arabia. scattered to broken middle clouds formed over
eastern Saudi Arabia.
Areas of Intense Interest. Cloud cover Mom the previous days
disturbance remained over eastern Iraq and Kuwait broken low
clouds at 3,000-6,000 feet in the nosh around Baghdad dissipated
by 1100Z. Over Kuwait, broken middle clouds from 8,000 to
14,000 feet moved on to the east by 0600Z. Broken to overcast
low clouds with 3,000-foot ceilings and 6,000-foot tops entered the
western pad of the area in the evening.

With the storm system approaching, Clods were southerly to
southeasterly at 5-20 knots.

Visibilities were restricted, primarily by haze and smoke from
burning oil Morning fog reduced visibility to 5 km in spots; most
haze resins were reposed at 8 km. Some dust was raged
during the day with increasing winds from the approaching system.

Temperatures increased in the warm Bow ahead of the approaching
system. Highs reached 200 C in the southeast but only 10( C In
the northeast where low clouds were present through much of the
day. Lows ranged from near freezing in the northwest to 8( C in
the southeast
