Subject: CANA Autoinjector Distribution
To: All Wing/CC's and Medical Units
1. A new automatic injector has been developed to counter the
effects of chemical warfare nerve agents. CANA will be available
shortly to be used in conjunction with the atropine and 2-PAM
autoinjectors already in the field. CANA contains the controlled
drug Valium and as a result requires special security measures to
prevent abuse.
2. Wing Commanders will develop a local plan for control find
distribution of CANA as follows:
A. The Director of Base Medical Services (DBMS) will take
custody of CANA shipments and secure them in an appropriate
manner.
B. Base disaster preparedness/airbase operability personnel
- will plan and implement a training program based on the attached
training package.
C. Based on a probable attack with chemical weapons, Wing
Commanders will direct the distribution of CANA by the DBMS
utilizing the predeveloped local plan. A record of individual
issue must be kept. Under no circumstances will CANA be
distributed without the threat of probable chemical attack.
D. At the conclusion of the conflict/war' as personnel depart
the AOR, or when the threat of chemical attack has been
withdrawn, Wing Commanders will direct turn in of CANA to the
DBMS for ease guarding and/or reentry into the medical logistics
system as directed.
