(U) USAFE first supported a deploying TAC unit when 353d Tactical Fighter Squadron A-10s (354th Tactical Fighter Wing, Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina) stopped overnight at Moron AB, Spain, enroute to King Fahd Airport, Saudi Arabia. (U) U.S. Army General John R. Galvin, USCINCEUR, issued a deployment order for the first European-based USAF aircraft to South- west Asia. Fifteen C-130Es from MAC's 37th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Rhein Main AB, Germany, flew to Thumrait, Oman, on 16, 27, and 28 August. Two TR-ls from SAC's 17th Reconnaissance Wing, RAF Alconbury, United Kingdom, deployed to Taif, Saudi Arabia, arriving 23 August. 17 August (U) USAFE had deployed 241 personnel to the USCENTCOM area of responsibility (map next page).
