ITEM NO. 4 DEPLOYING PERSONNEL WITH MEDICAL PROBLEMS
(SGHR ITEMS NO. 6, 23, 124, 18S)
BACKGROUND: There were several Instances of personnel being deployed to the
AOR with pre-existing conditions significant enough to require return to
CONUS.
DISCUSSION: Apparent causes Included absence of AFF 422, Physician Profile
Serial Report, and disregard by commanders for assignment rules for personnel
on medical hold. Also, many ARC personnel do not report medical problems for
fear of being discharged from the reserves: Dental problems are a particular
problem since many ARC personnel are not covered by dental insurance, and may
not feel able to afford adequate dental care. Screening of Individuals for
medical fitness for deployment varied from base to base.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Follow established guidance with more stringent adherence to
physical profiling procedures. Determine appropriate mobility screening
procedures, and add to AFR 28-4. MOP 17 If necessary. Possible solution to
dental problem might be to offer reservists an Inexpensive dental treatment
plan.
ACTIONS REQUIRED: None. Adequate guidance already exists on proper
procedures for screening, profiling, etc. Adherence to the regulating ~ the
answer to this Problem.
ACTIONS COMPLETED: N/A
STATUS: Recommend closure.
