avoidance of fresh vegetables and unbottled water. No problems
were noted with food borne outbreaks.
e. Insects and animals affecting health were not
noted to be a problem.
f. There were no poisonous plants or fish.
g. Food and dairy products were provided by inspected
contract dining facilities.
9. Veterinary Service Impact Statement: The only veterinary
services utilized were from the Army which was collocated with us
in a different part of the terminal. They provided us with
insecticide for use in the drains of the floor which were breeding
mosquitoes. This insecticide was successful but applications
needed to be repeated at regular intervals.
10. Preventive Medicine Impact Statement:
a. Other than briefings to avoid food borne illness and head
exposure, preventative medicine measures were limited to
immunizations, vaccines, and medications designed to limit the
possible effect of biological and chemical warfare. Serum immune
globulin was given to prevent Hepatitis A (no reactions noted).
An additional vaccine was given in January with a booster two weeks
later. Local reactions and myalgia were reported but medical care
was not sought for these and pyridostigmine tablets were taken
three times daily for 1-2 weeks to minimize any exposure to nerve
agents. Members noted the expected cholinergic reactions of
cramping, diarrhea, urgency, frequency and other minor reactions,
none of which were considered significant in our members.
b. Prevalent Diseases: None
c. Preventive Medicine measures necessary were primarily
related to avoiding fresh f~uits and vegetables while off-base and
the drinking of unbottled water or use of ice off-base to avoid
Hepatitis A. Antimalarial agents were not used at our locale.
d. As with all DOD personnel, our staff was briefed on local
customs and courtesies including prohibition against relations with
indigenous personnel, use of alcohol, refraining from eating,
smoking or playing music during daylight hours of Ramadan. Other
"taboos" regarding such as eating with the left hand while in
public, and appropriate dress of women in public, were briefed.
e. Medical Facilitles:
(1) Military medical support available included the 31st
and 354th ATH and the 8th Arlay Evacuation Hospital at KFIA. Air
Force facilities were used for the routine medical care of our
staff and Army medical facilities were utilized to RON unstable
patients admitted into the ASF and to provide medical care for our
