                 14) OBSERVATION: Many minor lessons were learned in
the signal arena during OPERATION DESERT STORM.
                     These include: more NVG's and GPS's are needed;
all vehicles need high flotation tires like the
                     HMMWV'S; the AM radio.problem persists -- need
more radios, a secure apparatus for them, and
                     more training with them.

                 DIVISION CHEMICAL OFFICER

                 1) OBSERVATION: MOPP 1 was the standard uniform for
the 24 ID during OPERATION DESERT STORM.
Soldiers are as effective operating in protective
clothing as they are in regular field clothing.

                 2) OBSERVATION: One NBC reconnaissance platoon is
not sufficient to provide coverage for a division
during rapid movement over extended distances. A
minimum of two FOX equipped NBC reconnaissance
platoons should be assigned to heavy divisions.

                 3) OBSERVATION: In a fast moving offensive
                     operation, attaching decontamination assets to
both the rear and forward units assures
responsive support to all units. 24 ID attached
one decon platoon to each maneuver brigade, two
platoons to DISCOM (Forward), and three platoons
                     to DISCOM (Rear).

                 4) OBSERVATION: There is no established system to
monitor the chemical defense equipment (CDE)
readiness of the division. The division chemical
office will implement a quarterly NBC Status
Report to include authorized, on-hand, and on-
                     requisition quantities.

                 5) OBSERVATION: During the initial phases of DESERT
SHIELD, it was determined that many units were
not authorized enough M8Al alarms to provide
adequate early-warning. Units must review their
MTOE and submit changes to reflect what is
actually required for adequate early warning.
The chemical school should coordinate to ensure
                     alarm authorizations are adequate.
