XII. ANIMAL MISSION:
The animal mission in theater during operation Desert Shield
was almost nonexistent based on theater policies which prohibited
the keeping of pets or unit mascots. The few military working dogs
initially in theater were cared for by an overabundance of
veterinarians and an occasional 91T when they were collocated with
the dogs, as in Khamis Muschait. Care was given to one horse and
three camels injured by US Forces during training exercises. The
91TIs in this unit were not kept busy and spent most of their time
inventorying drugs and on additional duties such as NBC NCO.
The federal stock system and MTOE drug authorizations are
totally inadequate for providing the needed veterinary drugs to
operate any type of animal care in a field environment. The only
way the unit could obtain needed veterinary drugs was through a
local purchase system which was not approved until the end of this
report period.
The animal mission in theater was basically untapped and could
have provided a wealth of information on disease incidence in the
region and good will with the local populace.
