    MASS CASUALTIES

    1. GENERAL. A  mass casualty situation will be considered as     existing in  a unit  any
    time the casualty load exceeds the capability of the medical means available to the
    unit.

       a. When a mass casualty situation exists, normal medical treatment activities
    coage and mass casualty procedures are begun.

       b. Each unit with organic medical personnel will establish a mass casualty SOP.
    This SOP must provide for sorting, treatment, and evacuation of casualties, with
    personnel designated for specific teamg and trained to perform their required role in
    a mass casualty situation.

       c. Units without organic.medical personnel will immediately contact their
    supporting medical unit.

       d. All mass casualty situations will be reported to 24th Infantry Division
    Surgeon I =ediately.

    2. TRIAGE (SortinA of Casualties):

       a. Each unit involv'ed will establish a gortini team and triage station on the
    fringe of the mass casualty area, along lines of personnel drift. This team will be
    directed by the senior medical person available.

       b. Medical companies will organize and train a sorting and treatment team
    consisting of one medical officer, one dental officer, and 10 to 15 medical enlisted
    personnel.

       c. Sorting Procedures:

            (1) As casualties arrive, they will be sorted and color coded (by marking the
    field medical card) as follows:

             (2) The maximum number of minimally injured     casualties will be   treated and
    returned to gainful work assisting the sorting team.      Other casualties will be
    prepared for evacuation according to priorities for treatment.
             (3) All available transportation means will be used to move casualties from
    gorting/holding area to treatment facilities. If additional transportation assets
    are required, notify the Division Transportation Officer, 04, located In Division
    Main of transportation requirement.
