                       estimated IOM to 2,000 cases of each annually). Reporting of tropical SMs (cliancrold,
                       lympliogmnuloma vcncrcum, and granuloma inguinale) is rare. Syphilis Is uncommon (fewer

                       (PPNG) is low.

             C]IOLERA (usually 2 to 3 days, range of 6 hours lo 5 days)
                   Transmission: Ingestion of causative agent, primarily In water conltminatcd with feces or vomitus
                       of infective humans.
                   Risk Period/D@ribution: Currently not endemic.
                   Remarks: Tlcre are occasional imported cases, and outbreaks occur, usually in the summcr.
                       Nonindigcnous personnel are at low risk of infection.

             MALAWA (12 to 14 days)
                   Transm@on/Vector Ecology. Bite of an Infective mosquito (Attopiteles spp.). The primary
                       mosquito vector is AIL stepheitsi, butA@L. culicifaciesilso Is reported.
                   Risk Period/Distribution: Transmission occurs from November to April, with an Increased Incidence
                       in December. Transmission occurs at die inland oasis of Al Ayn, and on the cost coast along the
                       Pulfo(Oman(only5pcrccntoftlicl*pulationllvc.sintnalnriousureas).Mostofthecolintty
                       (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and die west coast) is risk-frce.
                   Remarks: After the climina@o-,i of malaria on the west coast by an active control 1)mgraiii, t@o gnnual'@
                       incidence declined rapidly, from over 22,000 ea= In 1978 to 3,516 cases in 1984, Since 1984,
                       the annual incidence has remained constant ([here were 3,056 cases fit 1988; however, more than
                       thrcc-fou@ of the cases have I>ccn Imported). Indigenous cases are caused by Plasmodiunt ilvax;
                       somc of the imported cases are caused by P. falciparutit. Cases are reported year-round, and Ole
                       incidence increases from May to July.
