        They were Joined by Air Force helicopters, to be used for any

        needed search and rescue missions. The trip was 'made possible

        partly by the innovation of a young officer in the 1-101st AATK.

        The officer, First Lieutenant DeVito, recommended a fuel carrying

        option that allowed the Apaches to carry extra fuel in addition
        to their heavy load of ammunition. 77

              All last minute diplomatic efforts to avert war failed as

        the United Nation's 15 January deadline came and went. D-Day,

        the start of the air war against Iraq, was secretly set for 17

        January 1991. The entire world held its breath in anticipation

        of war. War would come, and the Screaming Eagles would draw
