             The development of air assault doctrine was the latese'step
       in the evolution of the Army's airborne forces. The use of

       paratroopers and glider infantrymen during WWII had shown great
       potential for the strategic mass movement ofotroops, but this
       potential was diminished by a lack of operational and tactical

       mobility. The US Marines addressed the issue of tactical

       mobility by using helicopters to deliver combat troops during the

       Korean War to conduct envelopments and rear operations. By the
       end of the Korean War, the Army was pursuing the operational
       innovations offered by helicopter inserted light infantry.Bl

             Greater focus was placed on the tactical mobility of light

       infantry during the latter half of the 1950s, This focus

       resulted in the Army Tactical Mobility Requirements Board's

       recommendation in 1960 for the establishment of "airmobile

       forces." The creation of the lith Air Assault Division was a

       direct result of the board's recommendation.B2

             The Army redesignated the llth Air Assault Division as the

       lst Cavalry Division (Airmobile) prior to deploying that division
       to Vietnam. The 101st Airborne joined the lst Cavalry in
       deploying to Vietnam. In 1968, the 101st became the Army's

       second airmobile division. During the Vietnam War, these two

       airmobile divisions developed the tactics which provide the

       ground work for today's air assault doctrine.B3

             Air assault is different from airmobile. Airmobile is

       essentially the movement of troops from one secure area to
       another. After insertion, the helicopters depart the area of
