SUMMARY:
fl-24 (MiM Heavy Armor) was hit on the left side of the tank, in
the NBC sponson box, by an unknown type missile/rocket. The tank
had 5topped to0captare enemy soldiers who were coming out of a
bunker to surrender. The loader was scanning to the rear of the
tank when he caught a glimpse of an incoming projectile
approximately seconds prior to impact. flue to the speed and
flame trail of the projectile, he believed it to be a missile.
The impact knocked the loader to the turret floor and caused the
TC to be thrown from the TC's hatch. 'rhere was a flash inside
the turret, and the on-board salon system automatically
discharged. The loader received flash barns to his face and both
arms, and was stuck by shrapnel in both legs. He was evacuated
from theater to the U.S. Army Hospital in Nurenburg, PRG and was
released on/about 19 Mar 91 for 30 days convalescent leave. The
gunner received Salon burns to his eyes, throat and lungs, and
shrapnel wounds to his left side. He had arterial damage to his
upper left arm, was put on medical hold after evacuation to the
U.S. Army Hospital at West Point, NY, and received 60 days
convalescent leave. He still has 19 pieces of shrapnel in his
body. There were no other injuries to the crew. There was no
resulting fire on the tank, and the tank was recovered on
