Summary of G Troop, 2d Squadron, 2d ACR Ba
a. The Troop was engaging elements of the Iraqi Republican
Guards Army when two enemy high explosive rounds hit the turret
of G-16 at approximately 261730 Apr 91. The first round exploded
on the frontal armor without penetrating. The second round
penetrated beneath the TOW launcher, killing the gunner and
disabling the vehicle. Later, at approximately 2100 local, a
friendly MAl Main Battle Tank shot two main gun rounds through
the back of G—16, destroying the vehicle completely.
b. Enemy Forces: The Iraqi's were equipped with E}~-1 and
T-72 tanks. The engagement ranges occurred around two thousand
meters, but as close as eight hundred meters. The enemy was
deployed in company sized groups, oriented primarily southwest.
Further inspection of the battlefield indicated that it was an
Iraqi BMP-1 that hit and disabled G—16, based on the B2~'s
location and the type explosion,
c. Operating Environment: Low light conditions throughout
the day due to heavy sandstorm and then nightfall. Moderate
battlefield smoke, zero precipitation. visibility: 250 meters
(400m thermals). Time of G—16 disabled: 261730A Feb 91. Time
of G-16 destroyed: 262100A Feb 91.
d. Crew reaction:
(1) Driver evacuated immediately and sought cover.
Seeing the Bradley Commander evacuating, driver then ran to
wingman's vehicle for assistance.
(2) Loader knocked unconscious by enemy blast. Later
nedivaced.
(3) Gunner KTh - massive blast damage to head, crew
unable to remove body while under enemy fire.
(4) Bradley Commander burnt by enemy blast. Evaluated
gunner as KIA, evacuated injured and evacuated the vehicle.
e. Vehicle Survivability:
(1) vehicle fire suppression System operated as
designed
(2) Frontal turret armor defeated first enemy round.
(3) shrapnel and blast from turret into crew area
wounded loader.
(4) No unusual factors of the vehicle's performance
contributed to the damage.
