*-~~~#E FF~2~i THE SE~ CeSTACLE BREACH

In conducting corttat security and screening missions on the
1st Marine Division's right flank between the two Iraqi defensive
barriers in southern Kuwait, elements of the 3d Marine ~egiment
encountered approximately 100 Iraqi soldiers who desired to
surrender. The Iraqi soldiers were frustrated and discouraged by
the war and the surprising rapidity of the Marine advance. The
Iraqis were completely demoralized. As the Iraqis courageously
crossed over their own minefield and, barrier to the protection of
the Marines, an Iraq' artillery and mortar attack by Iraqi units
attempted to discourage and prevent the Iraqi soldiers surrender
efforts. But the Iraqi soldiers refused to be discouraged and
braved a foot-rnbbiie forced march of approximately two miles to
escape the Iraqi artillery and to reach the safety of ~erican
Marines' protection.
