ANECDOTE FRO~ JCUWAIT CITY OBSE~VATIONS

Tho

An unexpected reception awaited our arrival in XUWAIT CITY
feeling of ~ubi1ation was tangible as people of various
nationalities crowded the intersecti~n near Xuwait International
}iotel. Families approached the ~arines as if their presence in the
city was an anticipated event. The warmth in each smile, handshake,
greeting added a new dimension to the purpose of our arrival nearly
seven months ago. The ultimate expression of gratitude and
acceptance' occurred whcn fami1ies.w~uld hand over their small
children to Marines to take a picture. The band of friendship was
instantaneous. In one occasion, a small 2 year old boy, held by
MSgt Thornton, leaned over to kiss him as he was coached by his
mother. A captain nearby pins his bars onto the boys small cap with
red, white, and green stripes representing the `cuwaiti flag.
