During the afternoon 0+ 25 February 1991-the battalion was engaged with
e~iemy forces in and around the ~l Burqan oilfield. ~ security patrol was
organized tQ investigate a series of bunkers and trenchlines adjacint to the
k~adqu~rte~s~~att~~n~ve perimeter. Sot Martinez, Cpl Royal, LCpl
Ri vera and LCpl Troy Gregory were sweeping one of these bunkers when LCpl
Gregory stepped on a suspected anti-personnel mine. Sgt Martinez, Cpl Royal
and LCpl Ri vera recovered quickly from the initial shock of the explosion to
observe their fellow team member had been critically wounded. Without
hesitation and in total disregard for their own safety moved to LCpl ~reoory~s
assistance. Immediately recognizing the seriousness o+ the wound, they
initiated life saving procedures. With a presence 0+ mind and calmness that
transcended this horrible situation they applied a field expedient tourniquet
to LCpI 6regory~s shattered left leg and applied field dressings to the other
gapping wounds which LCpl Gregory had suffered. Once the wounds had been
initially stabilized and understanding the criticality of getting LCol Gregory
to medical personnel, they carefully but quickly removed him further from
potential danger to await the arrival of the ambulance. They continued to
administer first-aid for the wounds and treat for shock. Upon arrival of
medical personnel it was opined that the exceptional performance of LCpl
Gregory's teammates contributed significantly to his chances 0+ survival.
Unfortunately, LCpl Gregory died of wounds at Fleet Hosoital tt=~ at ICOC), on
