deployed to SWA, but not to a degree higher than should be expected. Some
were legitimate, and others were the first tangible signs of "combat
stress," even before deployment, and were dealt with accordingly.
Conversely, other Marines who were not physically fit for deployment
sought correction of their problem in order to be deployed with the unit.

(Chaplain's Assistant) for which he had been activated. Continued
requests to the office of the Division Surgeon to fill the medical
department's T/D resulted in two additional activated reservists being
                   added to the battalion; 5 U.S.c 552 (b)(6)

                          Kreuger, Larry HA /8404
so that by the lpth of December, the T/O of the Navy personnel for the
Battalion was complete with the exception of the R.P.
Medical briefs on buddy aid, NBC drugs, and medical problems of SWA
were given by both the medical officer and corpsmen over the time period
spent at Camp Lejeume, both at the company and Battalion level.
Particular emphasis was placed on hygiene and the tropical diseases in the
region to which the unit was deploying. Medical personnel traveled with
Marines, both in the advance, and regular parties to provide medical care
both in flight and on arrival in SWA on 22 December 1990.
               E. 22 December 1990 to 31 January 1991
From the time of arrival in-country until the 5th of January, the
Battalion was located in a tent-city, Camp C, outside camp 15 in Al
Jubail. The medical department continued to provide routine sick call,
treat injuries, coordinate referrals to higher echelons of care, and
prepare for its combat mission by training of personnel and refinement of
its internal organization. Additionally, ordering and obtaining basic
supplies, drugs and equipment occupied much of the time spent at this
                   location.
The potential for chemical and biological warfare necessitated
preparation to perform the combat mission of the battalion in a
.contaminated environment. In addition to requesting and obtaining NBC
pharmacologic antidotes and prophylastic agents, the medical department
accepted the responsibility for issuance of these agents to the members of
the battalion as well as the critical instruction required in their proper
usage, including signs and symptoms of chemical agent exposure. It was
crucial to continue to emphasize conventional injury/disease prevention
and to stress the relatively small chance of a Marine being fatally
exposed to chemical agents given the excellent counter measures at hand.
ng January, a number of positions were occupied by the battalion,
beginning with its departure from C Camp on 4 January 1991.
The medical department conducted specific training for combat casualty
care, field preventive medicine, medical evacuation, and medical aspects
of NBC warfare for corpsmen in an effort to maximize the ability of each
HM in the battalion to provide optimum medical care in this difficult
environment and ensure the battalion's combat readiness by minimizing lost
days of duty by'Marines of the unit.
