The communications Platoon was activated with one WM Officer (Capt Sara
Thompson) as communications officer and 39 Marine enlisted at Marine Corps I&I
.station Rochester, New York under Headquarters and Service Company, 8th Tank
Battalion on 26 November, 1990. Once arriving at Camp Leleune N. C. on the
27th of November the platoon was augmented by 12 Marines and one Officer (Capt
Michael Sole) from C Co, 8th Tank Battalion I&I station, Tallahassee, Fl, six
Marine enlisted from D Co, 8th Tank Battalion I&I station, Columbia S.C., and
seven enlisted Marines from Tow Company, 8th Tank Battalion , I&I station,
Miami, Fl. Total Strength was 2 Officers and 64 enlisted Marines. Upon
reorganization, the communications staff quickly and methodically worked on
y began its
mission by setting up required communications for the battalion in bldo T-407.
On 3 Dec, 90, the unit began the SWA training package to include, NBC, Weapons
BZOI OpSec, customs and courtesies. Additionally, a brief was given by the 2d
Marine Division B-6 on communication problems and lessons learned from units
already deployed in SWA. In this brief, units were warned of the poor
performance of VHF communications due to adsorption of radio waves by the
searing heat and sand. Due to the extensive program, and the need for
training on new communications equipment, the platoon sent selected
individuals to communications training courses for the (3PS, Cryptographic
equipment, Position, Locations and Reporting System, Communication Security,
and field expedient antennas. These classes were then taught by the selected
individuals to the remainder of the platoon at night. Due to the combat
mission of the Battalion, Capt Thompson was assigned TAD to Comm Co, H&S
Battalion, 2d MarDiv. Capt Sole was assigned as the Battalion Communications
Officer. On 8 Dec, Comm Platoon sent a detachment to work on the AAOE, and ERP
for the Battalion. Assigned as the SNCOIC for the Arrival and Assembly
Operations Element (AADE) SSgt Shaw effectively distributed combat required
equipment from the Maritime Prepositioned Ships to the 6th Marine Regiment.
In preparation for using new equipment the Bn Commo provided comm classes to
the Battalion Staff and commanders. On 18-19 Dec, members assigned to the
Alpha and Bravo Command CDC conducted operator training at the ICAST trainer.
Due to the deficiency of a Maintenance Officer 2805 and extensive equipment
equipment to include the equipment aboard the MPS shipping,
the unit quickly addressed the problems and obtained what support was
available from 2d MarDiy, to include; 15 PLRS, 5 GPS, and cryptographic
equipment. On 113 Dec, the unit was embarked and ready for deployment to SWA.
