A. 26 November 1990 - 21 December 1990
Mobilization at Rochester, NY. Two days spent in issuing miscellaneous
equipment and tending to administrative requirements. Three weeks spent
at Camp Lejeune, NC in an organizational mode. Concentration was on
embarkation of rolling stock and unit equipment, as well as the issue of
NBC equipment, flak jackets, desert camouflage utilities and other pieces
of desert gear. All sections went through a SWA (South West Asia)
orientation package, as well as BZO firing of T/D weapons. Great efforts
put forth in establishing proper T/O and identification of shortages.
B. 22 December 1990 - 31 January 1991
Arrived in SWA and negotiation of an MPS off-load. Problems
encountered were of a mechanical nature as well as the normal
misinformation; i.e. not knowing exactly what was on the MPF ships. Most
of the equipment had been on ship since 1986. There were a multitude of
technical problems to overcome.
From the onset, the company had a severe lift problem due to equipment
shortages. Being short approximately 15 5 ton trucks and being burdened
with excess personnel, the company had to tighten its belt to lift just
bare essentials. Each time a displacement took place, it was done by
echelon, out of necessity. Motor Transport assets were requested on a
regular basis by 6th Marines and by Division Headquarters, in order to
facilitate their moves.
A noteworthy move in this period was a 110 mile road march from
Thunderbolt Range complex to Subail Hurayb.
Cooks platoon joined together with cooks from within the Division in a
collective effort to get hot meals to the troops in the field. Two hot
meals per day were provided up until the day prior to the ground
offensive.
Small arms and crew served weapons shoots were conducted while at
the Thunderbolt Range area.
The greatest achievement was being able to live in the austerity of the
desert and still be functional. All the while still trying to overcome
the aforementioned MPF shortages.
