In iiitidsight, if it were not for Reserve augmenters, 2d MAFTD[V would have been hard
pressed to fill out key NBC Specialist biUeES.4 Key NBC Officers spoke IiigWy of the
professionalism of Reservists and the beneficial role they played.5

(S) Marine Corps policy for NBC defense organization relies heavily on
assignment and Erairiing of additional duty NBC teams for mortitor/survey and
deconian7dnation operations down to the o corrlmanders and the-efore not implemented
in SWA.

(S) The augmentation of the 2d MAPDEV NBC platoon by Reservists was a
success.

(U) 2. Issue - NBC Defense Staff Coordination

(S) a. Discussion

(S) Staff coordination on NBC Defense surfaced continually as a concern. This is
a sensitive issue because it points to weakness in NBC Defeise coordination from
HQMC level on down the chain. It is also a very personality dependent issue and
should be viewed in -tl-ds context. The following areas are identified as the most
prevalent concerns of NBC Defense Officers in SWA and areas observed during data
collection.

(S) Most of the senior NBC Officers interviewed surfaced concern over the
perception that there is no single focal point at HQMC for policy on NBC defense
matters, and suggested a field grade NBC officer (LrCoVCol) be assigned. They were
