      food. Mangy wild desert dogs roamed freely through Marine Corps positions. Marines
      needed to clean themselves and their positions after the battle. NBC Officers played a
      major role in many units in planning and implementation of unit survivability measures
      after consolidation. For instance the 2/4 NBC Officer made provisions for hot showers,
      organized teams to gather and bum dead animals and awh, and organized clean-up of
      occupiable structures to improve the battalions living conditions.

             (S) During retrograde, washdown operations prior to agricultural inspection
      became the main focus of all units leaving Saudi Arabia. NBC personnel, the LDS, and
      Ml 2 were extensively used. However, many NBC Officers were concerned with use of
      the LDS for washdown operations. These concerns were mainly based on the vit-tual
      lack of spare parts for the M17 LDS and a concern for maintaining adequate levels of
      readiness for decontan-@naeion in follow-on deployment.
