              (U) OH II -IA, Individual Guide for NBC Defense, a pocket-size doctrinal
publication was widely distributed by MCCDC during the war and was well received by
those that read it. Although not in publication long, OH I I-lA was perceived as more
helpful than FMFM I I -1. This lends some crederce to the argument that smaller
pocket size doctrinal publications may be the way to go in the future. Certainly in SWA
       they reached a wide audience.

             (U) Many US Army pubucatiotis have been adopted as Marine Cor-ps doctrine.
Interviews stated the most helpful of these publications were FM 3-3 (FMFM 11-8),
NBC Contamination Avoidance, and FM 3-5 (FMFM I I - 10) NBC Decontamination. FM
3-3 provided guidance and procedures for agent downwind hazard prediction and NBC
reconnaissance (monitor/survey operations). All believed strongly that FM 3-3 was a
very good publication and contributed greatly. There was some confusion on whe(hcr
the Marine Corps should be using FM 3-3 or the ATP-45 as their main doctrinal
reference on control center calculations, although they contain the same basic
information and standards, rl-Lis issue should be clarified. FM 3-5 was also comidered
very useful. Main concerns with FM 3-5 were on the lack of enough information with
respec,, to casualty and aircraft decontamination. Most of those interviewed expressed a
need for more emphasis on field expedient and hasty decon. FM 3-4 (FMFM 11-9), NBC
Protection, was also rated as helpful but mariies complained about its lack of
information, only half a page, dedicated to desert operations. Survey results were
consistent with findings from the interviews.

              (U) NBC specialists interviewed art wanted a quick reference handbook. Such a
handbook should fit in a cargo pocket, have waterproof pages, contain information in
buileeized format, and cover aH essential basics on key NBC nvssions and equipment.
When shown an advanced copy of the new FM 3-7 (11-13), NBC Handbook, all agrcc.-d
that it was a good start.
