Monday - General Norman Schwarzkopf, commander of allied forces in Saudi Arabia, says he
thinks that the will of the Iraqi soldier can be broken and that he thinks that his forces are making great
progress toward that goal. (New York Times. February 5, p. Al.)
President Rafsanjani of Iran offers to serve as a mediator between the U.S. and Iraq in an effort to
bring about the peaceful end of the war. There was no comment from Iraq and a cool reception From
the Bush Administration. (New York Times. February 5, p. Al.)
Battleship USS MISSOURI opens up on Iraqi positions in Kuwait with her sixteen inch guns for th
first time in the Persian Gulf War. This is the first time the MISSOURI has fired its guns in combat
since the Korean War. This is seen as a further indication that an amphibious assault may be imminent.

Pentagon analysts report that some of the desalinization plants in occupied Kuwait had to be shut
down because of fouling by the massive oil slick unleashed by Iraq last month. (New York Times
February 5, p. A13.)
Jordan agrees to permit Japanese military aircraft to use Amman airport to ferry Gulf war refligees
to other countries. (London Financial Times, February 4, p. 3.)
Indications are growing that the estimated 45,()()O Egyptian troops and support staff members
stationed in Saudi Arabia will go into action against Iraqi forces should a ground offensive be mounted
to recapture Kuwait. Other Arab countries are in Saudi Arabia only to defend that country. (New York
Time~, February 5, p. A14.)
Some U.S. Marines express doubts over the ability of Saudi defense forces to deal with future
threats, after dealing with them in battle to recapture Khafji. (Baltimore Sun, February 5, p. 7.)
