            League.

 1947       U.N. plan divides Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state. Arabs refuse to
            accept the plan.

194849      Nation of Israelis proclaimed. Unsuccessful Arab invasion is ended by U.N.
            armistices. As a result, Israel gains territory.

 1950       Jordan annexes the West Bank that it has controlled since the 194849 war.

 1952       Military coup, led by Gamal Nasser, deposes Egyptian King Farouk.

 1953       King Hussein becomes ruler of Jordan.

 1956       Egypt nationalizes the Suez Canal. Israel invades Egypt, reaching the Suez Canal,
            U.N. cease-fire places international peace keeping force.

 1958       Russia begins training~and equipping Iraq. Iraqi Army overthrows monarchy of King
            Faisal II. At Lebanon's request, U.S. troops intervene in Lebanese War.

 1960       Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is formed in Baghdad by Iraq,
            Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela.

 1961       UK replaces 1899 Kuwait agreement with treaty of friendship and protection.
            intermittent warfare begins between Iraqis and Kurds. British troops stop an Iraqi
            attempt to annex Kuwait.
