Use of Improvised Refugea. The term 'improvised refuge' is
used to describe systems which offer only limited protection,
which can be created even when a supply of filtered air is not
available. The simplest form of improvised refuge is a room or
space with the doors and windows closed during the hours of
darkness and fully open in daytime, on the assumption that the
biological attack is most likely at night.
0 Further benefit can be obtained by using a space within a
space. Thus, inner rooms of buildings tend to have less
aerosol in them than outer rooms, especially if the opening is
toward the lee side of the building.
0 Further protection can be achieved if doors, windows and
other openings can be sealed, but this may seriously reduce
the habitability of the space, especially if it is not large.
The optimum solution will probably be to select fairly large
rooms and to keep the occupancy of each room small.
Lise of improvised Repoigatory Prot@cti_=. In some cases it
may be impracticable to use either collective protection,
individual protective equipment, or to remain with improvised
collective protection. In such circumstances consideration should
be given to the use of various forms of improvised respiratory
protection.
0 Certain types of surgical or other oral-nasal masks
(notably rigid types made of fibrous materials) do have a
useful particulate filtration capability. The problem with
such masks is that they tend to have a relatively high
resistance to the flow of air through them. Nevertheless,
some well fitting types may offer a useful degree of
protection.
0 As an expedient, a cloth, folded into multiple layers and
er the mouth and nose to protect from
biological material for short periods of time.
0 Negative Correlation. Negative correlation encompasses the
post attack examination of munition fragments using existing
instruments and can indicate whether fills are conventional or
