26.Following a biological agent attack, all food except canned or otherwise

well nrotected food, should be thoroughly cooked mrior to consumption.

All food should be insnpcted to ensure -that it was adequately protected

while exnosed to the infectious cloud. Thorough cooking would make foods

safe for consumption unless they are contaminated with certain heat stable

toxins such as Stanhylococcal enterotoxin R or heat resistant qnnres such as

anthrax, Thorough cooking means that all marts have been heated close to

the boiling point for 15 minutes. All, foods determined to be Rafe must be

Protected a"ainst secondary contamination. These measures must be Practised

bv those who transnort, store, prenare and serve food, also those who eat

the food. When annlicable, consideration must be given to control measures

necessary to nrevent contamination of food by insects and rodents. Cans

should be decontaminated by chemical means, boiling or flaming, prior to

onening. After this the contents are safe to eat with or without heating.

     27. EmDerience from training and exercises has shown how difficult 4.t, 4--, to

maintain @atisfactn-v nprsonal and area field hygiene, particularly in

unfamiliar climates. Very strict measures are required concerning the

treatment of waste and Rewage as well as management- of latrines. The -isk

of a biological attack highlights the necessity o4 giving -raining i-ri these

measures in order to be nrenared @n -educe as much as nossible the R-ffects

     of such an attack.
