                                   Portable Decontamination Shower Unit
                                        Requirements and Specifications

This paper defines the requirements of a portable shower unit to be
used during and after HAZMAT contact. The paper is in two sections,

. Requirements and their associated justification, and

*Specifications needed to support the requirements.

           A) REQUIREMENTS

This section outlines the seven requirements which a portable
shower unit must meet to be responsive to the organization's needs.
Each requirement is supported by justifying material. The
           requirements are as follows:

           1) Personal Comfort
The fire fighter taking the shower must stay in long enough to be
thoroughly cleansed. If the water is too cold or too hot the personal
discomfort will lead to a desire to get out of the shower before
decontamination is complete. Further, the thermal shock associated
with a cold shower can be a serious health hazard.

           21 ';afetv for the o
The nature of the job subjects fire fighters to a variety of risks. It
is imperative that all equipment used by fire fighters, to the extent
possible, not add to the risks.

           3) Fast Resoon,.;,g
In responding to emergency situations, seconds can make a
difference in averting property losses and saving lives. The shower
must be able to be set up for operation quickly.

           4) Portable
Portability is a major concern with all fire fighting equipment
because the equipment must be able to be transported to the scene.
Once at the scene, it must be able to be moved about often under
           very difficulty circumstances.
