   The commanding officer of the 3d Marines outlines the environmental,
   training, and cultural obstacles faced by Marines deployed to Saudi
   Arabia during Desert Shield. BGen Admire particularly emphasizes the
   assistance provided by the Saudi Arabian  military,   which  greatly
   improved the Marines' adaptation to the desert while also helping to
   build a sense of cooperation and mutual respect between the Marines
   and Saudi Arabians.
