SUBJECT:	SHELF LIFE - SUIT CHEMICAL PROTECTIVE
  
           TO:	SEE DISTRIBUTION

	1.	REFERENCES:

		a.  AFDPRC Msg, 082330Z, Jan 90, Shelf Life for Chemical
	Protective Overgarment (CPO) and Battledress Overgarment (BDO).

		b.  CRDUSASPTAP/STRAP-LR, Msgs, 241800Z, Jan 91, Shelf Life 
	for Chemical Protective Overgarment (NOTAL) .

	2.  Revised guidance has been received from NATICK Research
	Development and Engineering Center (NRDEC) pertaining to chemical
	suit shelf life extension.  Reference b is paraphrased to clarify
	and confirm shelf life extension announced by reference a.

		a.  Shelf life of all BDOs manufactured prior to 1986 (Jan - 
	Dec inclusive) is extended thru calendar year 1992.  The earliest
	BDOs were manufactured in1983.  BDOs manufactured in 1986 and
	beyond maintain an initial 5 year shelf life from date of
	manufacture.

	b.  Shelf life for all CPOs manufactured from 1977 to 1983
	(Jan - Dec inclusive) is extended to 14 years. CPOs manufactured
	prior to 1977 should be used for training only and not used as a
	protective overgarment.

	c.  Extension of shelf life is derived from test results of
	the stockpile surveillance program.  This is the only ??? for 
	??? as expiration of their shelf life for these items.  No BDO 
	or CPO should e considered past their shelf life unless notified
	through AF channels.
