          ISSUE/ITEM:

          SUBJECT:  Reserve Augmentation (AFRES/ANG Units)

          BACKGROUND:   Early activation of reserve units was  with  total  unit  activation.
          Later, this policy was changed to allow for selective activation.

          DISCUSSION: Selective activation should be authorized  for  reserve  units.  During
          Desert Storm, individuals were called to  duty  with  their  units,  regardless  of
          whether requirements existed.     This is  particularly  applicable  to  non-medical
          AFSCs, and to medical AFSCs not deployed  or  those-previously  filled  by  IMA  or
          other assets.

          ACTION RECOMMENDED:   Authorize individual call ups from  reserve  units  based  on
          requirements.
