                                       MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED
                                         DESERT SHIELD/STORM

          CATEGORY: Manpower and Personnel

          ISSUE/ITEM:

          SUBJECT: Reserve Augmentation - IMAs

BACKGROUND: IMAs reporting for duty should possess or have available published
assignment orders. In Desert Storm, there were delays in receipt of orders for
          some IMAs.

DISCUSSION: Lack of orders caused great inconveniences to the individuals
concerned, i.e., pay problems, rapid access to base services, and administrative
hassles. In some cases, because those individuals were not included on orders
listings, neither the gaining medical treatment facilities or the MAJCOM knew the
individual was inbound causing personal tracking/requirements errors, and
          complicating base reception efforts.

          ACTION RECOMMENDED:

                       (1) Ensure orders are provided immediately for IMAs reporting to
          duty.

                       (2) Ensure gaining HQ USAF/SGHR/MAJCOMs/MTFs are notified in
advance of IMAs to be gained.

          SUGGESTED OPRs/OCRs: HQ ARPC/SG

          SUBMITTER: [(b)(2)] HQ ATC/SGAX
