c. The use of contact lenses in a deployed and wartime
environment is new. In this case it proved to be quite
successful. Much of the success was due to the fact that the
aircrews followed the guidelines for having adequate amounts of
solutions and supplies on hand for possible deployment. In
addition, life support also ensured that the required amounts of
solutions were on hand. There were no major problems associated
with contact lenses experienced by any aircrew in this squadron.

RECOMMENDATION:

		(1) Contact lenses should continue to be employed by
aircrews in deployed and wartime situations as well as in
peacetime

		(2) Individual aircrews and life support sections of
squadrons with mobility commitments should follow supply
guidelines in order to ensure the successful use of contact
lenses.

	d. As expected, a significant amount of stress was
experienced by all personnel, especially aircrews during
hostilities. Although all aircrews appeared to handle the stress
adequately, those who more conscientiously followed established
routines of exercise, diet, and sleep appeared to do better.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

	(1) Flight Surgeons should ensure that aircrews are
briefed on the recognition and treatment of stress prior to
hostilities. Aircrew should be encouraged to continue regular
routines as much as possible within the constraints of the
wartime environment.

	(2) Flight Surgeons should work closely with command and
scheduling personnel to ensure that all aircrews are
appropriately rested as much as possible within operational
constraints.

	(3) The judicious, non-excessive use of Go and No Go
pills should continue to be employed in order to assure maximum
rest and aircrew safety.

3. SUMMARY:

Most of the problems that did occur during this deployment were
primarily problems of inadequate forethought in supplies deployed
as well as problems of resupply at the deployed location.
