File: aabff_05.txtJAN 22: DAY 6 - We were fragged to have 20 jets on alert for SCUD search and destory and at 0830 we scrambled eight of them loaded with CBU's. - The first go of 24 launched successfully at 0430 loaded with Mk 84's and Mk 87's with a 10 sec delay. - Iraq is busy this morning continuing it's launches against Riyadh. - Although pilots stepped at 1030 to the second twenty slated for SCUD hunting, none of them received taskings. - Punched 8 tanks yesterday for a grand total of 17. - The second go was scheduled for 20. We launched 19 with one ground aborting for RWR. - I requested an overfly on phases from CENTAF for a combat phase contingency. It is essential to have a good working plan for this. With the hours we are putting on these jets with the eight hour missions, it could really impede the mission without prior planning. - Fortunately we planned for enough halon and were accurately tracking the amount used. Day 6 in the war and there are criti- cal shortages being reported in theater. - Once you start rainbowing pilots, they get out of kilter on crew rest and don't get back in. Ride ops to make sure they do this for emergencies only and don't evolve this the night before. Also, make sure ops is scheduling from all AMU's across the board to make sure the flying and the maintenance work load is evenly dispersed. - I had to make a call on how to track discrepancies on the ECM pods. The question arose due to the fact that we did not have a pod per jet. We had to shuffly pods to FM jets as guickly as possible. Once the pod was down, the jet was green. JAN 23: DAY 7 - The first go of 24 launched at 0545. The mission director was General Horner who had received intell pointing to an airfield north of Baghdad that was full of bombers suspected of being uploaded with chemical munitions. All 24 launched and line 29 returned for an Equipment Hot Light. They took out sixteen bombers and were credited with destoying 1/3 of the Iragi bomber force. Mood is swinging up again as we watched the tapes from the flight. - The first go was fragged with alternating 84's and 87's.
