the least amount of logistical repair acquisition problems
for comm. I would think that having an airfield UTC [Unit
Type Code] that provides for sweepers, airfield lighting,
crash recovery, transient alert, fire department---- Again,
I assume that this is already somewhere. I just have not
seen it.

Too often I have seen packages just tailored after the fact
and coming in piecemeal. Having very strong leadership at
the top works. Having a very strong and competent airfield
manager works. I found that the DO [Director of Operations]
must delegate operational flight ops, airfield operations,
and maintenance operations to the right kinds of people to
get the things done. Having an airfield concept in mind is
very helpful. Lots of things work because lots of good
people were given the reins to do the job that knew how to
do it best; that worked.

S: What is your proudest moment here at the airfield?

M: When the F-4 crashed, the airfield operational response to
the crash was a proud moment. Installing the airfield
approach lights quickly in the way and manner that we did
was a proud moment. Watching the F-16 pilot get off the
rescue chopper was a proud moment. Seeing the A-10s and the
F-16s and MAC all working together was a proud moment.
Seeing the Saudi Airport Authority and the Saudi Army
officials working with the Americans in a joint manner was a
proud moment. These were all things that I personally
worked for. Of course the end of the war was a proud
moment. Watching Power House develop into a strong,
collective leadership was a proud moment.

S: If you had to give advice to someone coming into a similar
situation, what would that advice be?
