In those instances where one or two SMEs were the only medical providers we did several things. First, each SME-only beddown was provided a bioenvironmental engineering and environmental health technician to assist with these vital services. Second, each was provided with an independent duty medical technician (IDMT) or general practitioner (Tabuk) to assist with 24-hour coverage and time off for the flight surgeon. Third, each SME, whether with an ATH or as a stand alone, was assigned to an ATH for medical and preventive medicine consultation, hospitalization, and resupply. The ATH commander was designated the Director of Base Medical Services (DBMS), where an ATH was assigned, and the senior flight surgeon was the DBMS at SME-only beddowns.
