S: Can You describe a combat mission?
E: I can describe a typical mission. I will take the little
mission of the "three turn go" here. Generally speaking,
depending upon which of the eight ships; we have an eight-
ship staggered; one that lands here about 7:30 local. The
second eight-ship will land about 8:30; the third eight-ship
will probably land an hour or two later than that. We are
staggered, and we try to work it as much like a ballet so
that you have an eight-ship taking off and an eight-ship
landing throughout the day, and we go from 7:30 [a.m.], and
the last takeoff is usually about 4:00 or 5:00 in the
afternoon.
Generally speaking, we come in here--the eight-ship we fly
is actually two four-ships. The four-ship will fly in.
We've got 12 slots there on the Viper ramp, of which the
last four we use for maintenance. The first eight we use as
an ICT [integrated combat turn]. A guy will land, a four- 1>
ship will land, clear the runway, taxi into ICTs, if they
are open, one through four. They will shut down.
Even before a guy is getting out of the airplane, a bomb
crew is already uploading.
[(b)(1)sec 3.4(b)(4)]
That four-ship will jump out, bombs uploading even as they
are coming down the ladder; then we will get together and
read for about 10 or 15 minutes for the next sortie; talk
about lessons learned in the last sortie; talk about what
we are going to do different, where we are going, and take
a look at the target area and threats for the next sortie.
