communications elements functioned as message "nodes" in order to
accommodate the more than forty stations on the AE RF net at its
peak. This was done by simultaneously operating five separate HF
nets, one linking the AECC with its net control elements, and the
others linking those elements with their respective AECEs, AELTs and
MASFs. This system proved to be very successful; it decreased the
number of radio sites reporting directly to the AECC to only seven,
thereby improving communications efficiency and effectiveness.

d. Mobile Aeromedical Staqinq Facilities. The initial requirement
for two complete MASF packages (personnel and equipment) was
increased to 12 in response to the revised casualty estimates
predicated on potential offensive actions. Four additional MASF
personnel packages provided augmentation capability in anticipation
of the expected heavy casualty flow. Of the 16 MASF personnel
packages deployed in support of Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM, 14
were ARC assets.

(1) Pre-Hostilities Positioning of MASFs. The initial two MASFs were
positioned in Riyadh and Dhahran. In September an additional MASF
arrived and was established at King Fahd International Airport. As
the AE system expanded, the Riyadh and Dhahran MASFs functioned in
both ASF and MASF roles, preparing patients for both strategic and
tactical aeromedical evacuation. With the opening of an ASF at
Dhahran in October, the MASF at that location was closed. However,
it remained in place, providing assistance to the ASF during the
transition period in which it prepared for relocation to A1 Jouf in
support of the potential
