TEST: Administer Convulsant Antidote for Nerve Agent (CANA) Using -
the Autoinjector
NOTE TO THE TRAINER: This test checks the soldier's ability to
administer convulsant antidote for nerve agent (CANA) to a casualty.
TELL THE SOLDIER: "you are required to give buddy-aid to a nerve -
agent casualty and he has already been given three Mark I autoinjectors.
When I say, "GO" you must administer the CANA
autoinjection to the casualty. You must perform all the steps of
procedure in the proper sequence to pass the test ." "GO."
GO NO-GO
1. Takes out casualty's CANA autoinjector.
2, Tears open plastic by pulling apart the
split end of autoinjector.
3. Checks casualty to determine injection site.
4. Arms injector by grasping autoinjector
in dominant hand with needle end extending beyond
thumb and index finger and pulling off safety cap. -
5. Places black end of autoinjector against
injection site.
6. Injects casualty by applying firm even
pressure to injector until it pushes needle
into injection site and holds in place at least
10 seconds.
7. Carefully pulls injector straight out and
massages site.
8. Attaches used autoinjector to casualty's
pocket flap.
ASK THE SOLDIER:
9. "How many CANA injections should you,
a nonmedic, administer to the casualty?"
SOLDIER RESPONDS: "One injection."
