POINT PAPER ON EFFECTS
OF AIRCRAFT FLYING THROUGH
'CLOUDS' OF BW AGENTS
- Particulate size of BW agents is 1-10 micron range
[(b)(1) sec 3.4 (b)(2)]
-- Similar to cigarette smoke
- BW agent released as result of explosion may be carried
aloft but will be rapidly dispersed by winds aloft to non-
lethal concentrations
- Trace amounts of BW may cling to skin of aircraft and
enter environmental control system
-- Duration of flight through cloud, concentration of
agent, and continued flight will reduce likelihood of
significant hazard
-- Temperature in bleed air system will probably kill
spores (lab method of killing spores is to autoclave -
250 F for 15-20 minutes at 4-5 atmospheres) ECS
reaches 1200 F in most fighter a/c and 300 F in most
'slow-movers'
- Washdown of a/c with steam would probably kill/remove
those trace amounts of agent remaining after landing
-- Current a/c decon capability can provide steam
-- Solution of 0.1% ?????
