Saudi Arabia: Desalination Capabilities
1. In 1990 desalinated water accounts for about 30 percent of total
municipal water demand countrywide. In large urban areas, including Riyadh,
Mecca, Jiddah, and Taif, desalinated water supplies about 90 percent of total
municipal demand.
2. There are numerous small reverse osmosis desalination plants
countrywide that primarily supply local industry, agriculture, and towns.
Capacities of these facilities generally do not exceed 1 million gallons a
day (MGD). Significant desalination plants include:
--A1 Jubayl Desalination Plant Water Storage and PST Multistage Flash
(MSF): [(b)(l)sec3.4(b)(1)] maximum capacity: 290 MGD; supplies 90 percent of
Riyadh's water via two 460 KM parallel pipelines and Jubayl industrial city.
--A1 Aziziyah Desalination. Plant; MSF: [(b)(l)sec3.4(b)(1)] maximum
capacity: 57.5 MGD: supplies water to A1 Khobar, A2 Damman, Safwa, Seehat,
Ruheema, and Dhahran.
--Yanbu-Medina: MSF; [(b)(l)sec3.4(b)(l)] maximum capacity: 25 MGD;
supplies water to Yanbu and Medina.
--Jiddah TPP and GTPP 1 and 2 Desalination Plants; MSF; [(b)(l)sec3.4(b)(1)]
supplies water to Jiddah.
[(b)(l) sec 3. 4 (b)(l)]
--Jiddah Reverse Osmosis Desalination Plant; RO; ; maximum
capacity: 25 MGD; supplies water to Mecca and Taif.
--Ash Shugayg Desalination Plant: MSF; [(b)(l) sec 3.4 (b)(l)] maximum
capacity: 30 MGD: supplies water to Abha, Khamis Mushayt, Uhud Rafidah.
3. The major desalination facilities in Saudi Arabia are large. very
costly installations, [(b)(l) sec 3. 4 (b)(l)]
