ODS MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED
LOGISTICS CATEGORY
LOGISTICS ISSUE NO. 11 Body armor, helmets, unavailable
(SGHR ITEMS NO. 105, 111)
BACKGROUND: Medical personnel found themselves in an environment where body
armor was essential but not previously identified. Consequently, there was a
shortage of body armor and helmets on mobilization.
DISCUSSION: TA 016, Special Purpose Clothing and Personnel Equipment,
authorizes each individual assigned to a hostile fire environment to have body
armor and a helmet issued. these items were not available and were borrowed or
emergency requisitioned.
RECOMMENDATION: Assign body armor and helmet for each individual as part of
standard mobility bag issue. Items should be worn by personnel during training
exercises.
ACTIONS REQUIRED: This is not a medical issue. AF/LG is addressing this issue
for all functional areas to meet future theater requirements. Previous
planning for a contingency in SWA did not contain a requirement for all
personnel to have body armor. CENTCOM established the requirement early in ODS
causing problems for the entire Air Force (not just for medical personnel).
Recommend these MLL be closed as a medical issue.
ACTIONS COMPLETED: N/A.
STATUS: Recommend closure.
