wells should only be accomnlished immedia@ ..prior to
-becrinnincr work on the pump motors and electrical components
that were submerged. -Less corrosion will take place if the
components are not exposed to air. Also, there is a
possibility that some of the 13umo motors could be rei5aired for
the short term rather that replaced. This should be
investigated 'because 'of the long lead. times for motor
replacements.
During the data collecting phase of our investigation, it
was noted that several of the secondary pump stations were
-off-line due to electrical power outages. If 13ower can not be
brguctht back mp, then auxiliary generator sets need to be
brought in and connected for emergency operation. otherwise
backup will occur at those points. OMI is aware of the
situation.
S. Collection System Odor Problems. It should be
noted that odor problems at the pump stations existed prior to
-the war and will continue to be a problem. The high
temperatures of the wastewater and the long residence time
within the conveyance system leads to anaerobic conditions
which in turn enhances the production of hydrogen sulfide. the
odor producing compound. The long residence time within the
system -is inherent to a long, flat, system with multiple
pumping points, and will be aggravated by the low flows
generated by the-reduced population. .
The odor at the beach areas caused by the pump station
by-passes will be eliminated by the repair of the major pump
stations.
once the main pump stations are on line,, work should
begin on the existing odor control stations and repaired'in
order of priority based on population centers. Lonct lead
times' for supplies needed to operate the odor control
Processes mail occur. The city should anticipate this and
order needed materials and supplies now.
odor problems existed within the collection system prior
to the war; not only at the pump stations, but odors were
evident along various gravity pipelines, as well. It is n 'ot
reasonable to expect that the pre-existing odor situation can
be improved at this time or in the near future. The Black and
Veatch Master Planning Report prepared in 1989 gives an
excellent discussion of the problems, recommended solutions
and investment projections for addressing this long term
problem. In the short term, the realistic goal must be
.returning to pre-invasion conditions, not to correct pre-
invasion problems.
