2. Odor Control Systems. The various methods of odor- include
those presented in Table 1, below.
Table I
Method Process
Source control. Replace or modify operating systems
Absorption Capture by water or other fluids
Adsorption Capture by activated'carbon
Biological Oxidation by microorganisms
Chemical Oxidation by odor components
Condensation Cooling of odorous stream
Containment Hold or retain for treatment
Counteraction Diminish in presence of another odor
Dilution Dispersion below threshold levels
-incineration .Combustion of odor agent
Masking Superimpose a fragrance
(From Standard Handbook of EnvirarL mental Engineering, 199o, by
Robert A. Corbitt; McGraw Hill Publishing Co., N;Y.
EPW installed 146 odor control systems throughout the
sewage system. The general types of systems used are listed
below:
Types of SystpmA
Wet scrubbers at Ardiya WWTP and 7 major
pumping stations
Large Carbon absorption units at major pumping
stations
pH control system at Ardiya WWTP
Small carbon filters at minor pumping stations
Force main air injection systems at 15 major
pumping stations
at 56 minor pumping
stations
Manhole sealing
Condition of Odor Control Systems at Time Liberation.
The various odor control systems appeared to have sustained
.little or no dainacte during the war and were therefore in the
same general condition at liberation as before the invasion.
The systems were not operational due to lack of maintenance
and chemicals and supplies needed for operation.
Present Condition. Virtually every component of the
sewacte system fnetwork and sewage treatment facilities) is now
generating or has the Potential for generating obnoxious
odors. A three-week informal survey of the system has shown
that the same areas do not always have odor problems, but many
