December 1990, one Aven@ley- platoon and a battalion
team deployed to the division's Howard
operating CP and logistics base to build in air defense
umbrella over critical assets and facilitate the molding
of @i defense as the remainder of the division deployed.
Battery B, in direct support of Tiger Bde, remained in the
vicinity of AA @-lorse to support XVIII Airborne ot-ps with
an on order mission to support RIARCENT future operations.
Throughout the entire movement air defense coverage of
critical assets and units in each assembly area was
maintained. As the division completed its movement west,
the battalion also moved its Defense Fire Coordination
Cell to the newly formed CRC at KKMC, while positioning
all remaining battalion elements to the same sector of
operations. Simi-ilttneoLtsly, the BAttalion Commander ind
liaison officer at the DMAIN worked numerous offensive
contingency plans, which Utilized the division as the
theater reserve sk-tpportiriq different units at variants
locations xcross:, the entire -@heater front.
DEFEI\ISE OF WiqDl AL Batin (14 - 17 Jan 91)
As VII Corps matured in theater it was becoming
apparent that Iraq might conduct a preemptive strike with
the intent of disrupting our preparation for future
operations. The WAdi Al Batin was considered to be the
major axis of advance for both ground and air forces into
Saudi Arabii. The Ist Cav was given the order mid
14 January, to quickly move under the
cover of
darkness to assume defensive positions the next morning
south of the 'rapline Road and iqa,far Al BAtin, but in a
position to support the Syrians to our front ind the
Egyptii7ins to our flank. Upon receipt of this order, the
battalion quickly completed its finil task organization
changes as units prepared for and conducted their
