MI STORY
1. The lith Military Intell igence Company
TECHINT), Foreign Materiel Intelli4ence Battalion.ch(FMIB
@egan it@ deployment with the attachment of one T nical
Intelligence ( I)-team to the XVIII Airborne Corps' 519th MI
Battall-on, 525th MI Brigade on the 20th of August, 1990.
The team provided TI briefings to members of the -corps for
roughly one week, traveling from FortcBr:yy@ Ng to Fort
Stewart, GA and Fort Campbell; KY before a tu eparting
for Saudi Arabia on 28 August 1990. The remainder-of the
company continued to prepare for deplo ent at Aberdeen
Proving Ground, MD, maintaining the pirtoon configuration
until iust Prior to deployment wh@n the com any's acnalysts
were r&distiibuted to support two additionaipll:-man TI teams
along with a base analytical element.
2. NJ With the main element not departinq to the KTO
until iafi@ary, 1991, the company was afforded additional
time for TECHINT traifiing. A gr@at-deal of time was spent
with national level ag&ncies in an attempt to maximize-the
analysts' knowledge of Iraqi materiel.- AdditionallK,
foreign materiel exploitations continued at APG with t e
arrivdl of previously-scheduled projects.
3. @) Due to the potential usage of chemical and
biological 'weapons by Ira during Operations Desert Shield
and D6sert Storm, a great 2eal of-emidhatis was placed on
the bdttalion's' chemical and biomedical samplin4 mission.
This mission would be an integral part of verifying first
use by Iraq. llth Co. M4idical and NBC analysts trained
extensivelk.during Desert Shield training for this mission
due to t inh&rent dangers of dealin§ with such samples,
along with the high interest of such a mission. Great
advancements were made primarily with the types of equipment
to be used for the collection ahd shipment bl samples. New
techniques and e@uipment were developed and produced in
conaun&tion with t e Intelligence Materi@l Activity at Fort
Mea e, MD.
4. Two 11-man TI teams were organized to support
the U.S Army 7th Corps and the Marine Expeditionary Forces.
Thectia;alytical base element, compris@d of the senior
fun onal area analysts and a small headquarters section,
totalled 28 persohn&l. This made up the Analytical element
of the Joint @aptured Materiel Exploitation Center (JCMEC)
located near Dhahran, Saudi Arabii. A fourth contingency TI
team was not generated out of the base element.
5. tQ on 10 December 1990 the company operations
officer deployed to Saudi Arabia, along with thb S-@ and the
S-4, as part Of an advanced party to prepare for the main
bod@'s arrival. The main body departed APG via Andrews AFB
on ; January 1990 and arrived at the Dhahran Airbase on 7
January 1990 occupying a building in Khobar Towers.
